Planning the unplannable year… it might be easier than it sounds

You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can control what goes on inside.

Dr. Wayne Dyer

How do you plan for a year of uncertainty? I am normally a planning rock star. Every New Year I either make or buy a planner, I take 2 days and really map out and manifest my New Year goals. This year, I am finding it almost impossible when the world around me seems out of any controls I have. There will be no lists of places to visit, people to see, adventures will be limited, and motivation has become a challenge with physical wellness when mental wellness is compromised.

That’s the bad news. The good news is I’m learning and being reminded of what I can control. And that is me. I can control what I learn, how I react to things, what I put in my body, the way I start my mornings. Below are some things I have been thinking about as 2021 goals to set for myself. Hopefully you find inspiration some of the ideas below and in knowing WE ARE IN CONTROL and it starts with ourselves.

Simple Ideas for Personal Growth in 2021

  1. Physical Wellness: Write down 10 walks or hikes I want to take. Then take that motivation and Join a challenge like the Virtual Running Club. The VRC have amazing challenges (and no you don’t have to run the entire time) the kids can even get involved in. This year we are trying the Can you Tell me How to Get to Seasme Street Challenge, you register for the amount of miles you commit to for the year and every time you achieve the milestone they send you a character pin. I love it!
I want to find at least 5 waterfalls to hike in Washington and Oregon. Shoot for unique nature spots in your area.

2. Get back to a hobby you had when you were younger.

For me it’s photography. I love photography as you have noticed if you have seen some previous blogs. Especially photographing nature. But I only take photo’s with my phone. There was a time when I would take my ‘real’ camera out for shots, I want to get back to that and create an Issaquah Washington Photo Book and calendars!

3. Learn something completely new.

This is a challenging one! What is something you have always want to learn? The older I get the more I want to learn how to use a sewing machine. My mom was a pro that could quilt! I’m going to set my goal low and go with a throw pillow for now! Other ideas I’ve had is to learn the Italian language or to work on my spanish.

4. Preserve family history

Create a cook book of your favorite family recipes so you can share it with others. Or dive into Ancestry.com! I’ve been mapping out our family tree via Ancestry.com and it is the COOLEST thing to connect the dots and discover where your ancestors have been in this life! I find it SO rewarding.

5. Adjust your morning routine

I recently read an article 5 Morning Habits of Highly Successful People in the December issue of Forbes. I observed that I am doing everything ALL WRONG! I set an alarm, I reach for coffee immediately, I check my phone and email within minutes of waking up. I don’t even allow myself to WAKE UP. It makes sense… I feel drained by 11am sometimes. This year I will adjust my morning routine.

I created a printable planner. It includes a wellness planner, SMART Goal setting and more!
